LUXFLY (Indoor Skydiving as a Wheelchair User!)

Close to Decathlon and IKEA Arlon, just over the Luxembourg border, you’ll find LUXFLY, an indoor skydiving centre. This time, we weren’t in the area for shopping. We were going to fly!

There were four of us: two wheelchair users, Lex and me, accompanied by Dimitri and Sam from the Tricentenaire. Dimitri had organised a special project which Lex and I gladly took part in: indoor skydiving! He’d made the reservations, and I was curious about what the day would bring. 🙂

Getting Inside: Parking and Stairs

We found parking easily. Reaching the reception involved stairs, which I climbed with help from Sam and Dimitri.

LUXFLY has a special stair-climbing wheelchair available for people with reduced mobility, but Lex and I preferred not to use it. This isn’t a step-free entrance, so arranging access support beforehand is important.

There is an accessible toilet available, but I prefer those at IKEA.

Ready for the Wind Tunnel?

Before flying, we watched a short instruction video. You need to remember a few hand gestures to communicate inside the wind tunnel. Then came the overall, earplugs, glasses and helmet. It’s noisy in the tunnel!
Sam helped me into the overall, and off we went.

Two people assisted me inside the wind tunnel, with Sam at the door. Dimitri stayed in the spectator area, filming and grinning.

We each went in twice, for about two minutes at a time. During my first flight, my legs went all over the place! Towards the end, I started getting more stable.

The second time, the instructor took me all the way up. What an experience!

A Little Diploma and Flying Memories

Once everyone had finished, an instructor gave a little demonstration.

When returning the helmet, and overall, you receive a little diploma with your name and a QR code. This lets you download some media.

As Dimitri had filmed everything, I used his videos to make the short compilation above. Not your everyday outing near Arlon!

My name is Kimberly, and I visit the Tricentenaire "Centre de jour" in Bissen, Luxembourg, two days a week. In 2018, I had a brain hemorrhage in the area of the brain stem. Since then, I have been using a wheelchair due to balance problems. I speak slowly and unclearly, have some eyesight problems, and don't have much strength or coordination in my right hand and my right side. I am using my left hand to write, type and eat, but as I am originally right-handed, it is a bit of a challenge.

I live in Ettelbruck, Luxembourg, but I was born (1969) and raised in The Netherlands.
